How You Do Anything Is How You Do Everything

A few years ago, I worked with an organisation where I noticed something troubling about their standards. The exterior of their building—the first thing every customer encountered—was in poor condition.

There was litter on the pathway, damaged walls left unrepaired, thick cobwebs around light fittings, peeling paint on window sills, and weeds spilling from the gutters over the entrance.

What struck me most wasn’t just the state of disrepair but that everyone, including senior leaders, walked past it every day without taking action. Over time, they had stopped noticing it. The very people responsible for shaping the customer experience had become blind to what their customers—and potential employees—were experiencing.

But this wasn’t just about a messy exterior. It was a deeper reflection of ownership, pride, and culture. When we let standards slip in one area, it often ripples through everything we do.

As leaders, the small things matter. The habits we cultivate, the standards we uphold, and the behaviours we model set the tone for our teams. It’s not about chasing perfection—it’s about consistency.

So, take a minute and reflect:

1️⃣ What are you walking past every day without addressing?

2️⃣Are you and your team clear on the standards expected?

3️⃣Do those standards align with your organisation’s goals, values, and the expectations of your customers or stakeholders?

Leadership isn’t just about setting high standards; it’s about maintaining them, even when it feels inconvenient or insignificant. Because when we let the small things slide, it becomes easier to justify letting the big things slide too.

What’s one action you can take today to raise the standard for yourself and your team? Why not make a commitment to notice what truly matters—and to take ownership of it.
