Beware the HiPPO

ree

In recent times it has become increasingly recognised that high performing teams and organisations are characterised by a psychologically safe environment where all members of the team - whatever their rank or role - feel able to contribute to innovation and improvement.

One of the biggest barriers to creating a psychologically safe culture is the HiPPO.

The term HiPPO stands for Highest Paid Person's Opinion and it refers to a situation where decisions within a team or organisation are heavily influenced by the viewpoint of the most senior member, often based on their position or salary.

HiPPO's can assert their opinions as facts, even without thorough research or validation. In an age where data is shared and collaboration encouraged, relying solely on HiPPO opinions can lead to problems with teams feeling micro-managed and disempowered.

Since the highest paid person experienced success, promotions and typically consensus from others in the organisation, they can run the risk of believing they are always the one in the room with the best idea.  When others in the room acquiesce to the HiPPO's opinion without a challenge, it just adds to the highest paid person’s confidence and sense of superiority. Alas, a vicious cycle begins and it is hard to stop.

So next time you are about to voice your opinion, pause and ask yourself, am I the HiPPO in the room?  Am I inadvertently silencing valuable and validated voices? Am I fostering an environment where every team member feels empowered to contribute their ideas? Am I actively seeking out dissenting opinions to refine our decisions?

While your expertise is invaluable, true leadership extends beyond your individual insights. It embraces collaboration, inviting diverse perspectives into the fold.
